Artisan Candle Brand Story

The journey of Maxwell Thomas

The story of Maxwell Thomas is not a tale of overnight success or fleeting trends; it is a narrative defined by a long-standing obsession with quality and a relentless pursuit of craftsmanship. It began with a foundational belief that the objects a man surrounds himself with should be as resilient and refined as the life he leads. We believe that an atmosphere isn’t just felt—it’s built through intentionality and the integrity of the materials we choose.

From countless hours spent refining complex fragrance formulations to the meticulous pursuit of a timeless, luxe aesthetic, this brand was forged for those who understand that true luxury lives in the details. Every element—from heavy amber glass to the steady burn of a wooden wick—is a testament to our commitment to small-batch production.

Explore our core collection of handcrafted scents and experience the foundation of our craft through our small-batch candles.

Maxwell Thomas was built for the discerning individual who appreciates the weight of a well-made object and the quiet power of a scent that lingers long after the flame is extinguished. We don’t just make candles; we curate an experience of rugged elegance and enduring character.

A Spark in the Silence

In April of 2020, as the world retreated behind closed doors and the familiar hum of daily life slowed to a near silence, Ron Dillon found himself searching for a meaningful creative outlet. What began as a simple spark of curiosity soon evolved into a dedicated pursuit that transformed his kitchen table into a makeshift laboratory. He spent his evenings immersed in the quiet study of candle making, dedicating countless late nights to experimenting with the delicate alchemy of various waxes, precise wick placements, and the complex layering of fragrance oils.

Mastering the Craft

The journey was defined by trial, error, and the steady refinement of his technique as the craft slowly began to click. Ron spent several months mastering the meticulous patience required for a perfect pour and the unwavering discipline needed to build a brand from the ground up. He learned to navigate the nuances of scent throw and burn times, ensuring that every detail met his growing standards. Candle by candle, what started as a pandemic hobby grew into a sophisticated and deeply personal pursuit.

Bringing Light to the Room

Eventually, after navigating the inevitable doubts and “what-ifs” that accompany any new venture, Ron decided to take a definitive leap of faith. Equipped with nothing more than a small stash of premium supplies and a humble Instagram account to share his progress, he launched his very first candle brand. It was always intended to be more than just a business venture. It was a mission to turn a simple spark of curiosity into a source of comfort, designed to brighten physical rooms and the lives of those within them.

The candles—then called Max & Stellasold out just a few days after their release. Every restock that followed did the same. People fell in love with candles that weren’t just beautiful to look at, but filled a room with bold, memorable fragrances you couldn’t find anywhere else.

BUT LIFE MOVED FORWARD

During COVID, Ron relocated to Chicago and candle making had to be put on pause. Still, the question kept coming from friends, customers, and strangers online:

When are you going to start making candles again?”

In 2025, the answer finally came. The spark to create returned—but this time the vision was bigger than candles.

Ater finding his rhythm with the craft, Ron chose to relaunch the brand under a name that carried deeper weight: Maxwell Thomas. Named after his son, the new identity transformed the business from a personal creative outlet into a family legacy. It was a shift in perspective that elevated every pour and every fragrance choice. What had started as a way to navigate a quiet season of life had grown into a much more significant ambition. He was no longer just making candles; he was focused on the idea of building something real, something lasting, and something meaningful that could one day be passed down through the generations.

Every candle is still made the way it started:

Small batches. Hand poured. Carefully crafted.

Some things are better done the old-fashioned way.

And some things are worth building for the future.
